La campagna Decolonising Our Minds degli studenti della School of Oriental and African Studies mira a rimuovere dal curriculum di storia della filosofia i pensatori bianchi, come riportato da numerosi quotidiani?

Per capirne di più Kenan Malik è andato a parlare con studenti e accademici scoprendo che le richieste degli studenti sono più sfumate, come scrive in un articolo per il Guardian. Partendo da un inquadramento più corretto del punto di vista degli studenti e avvalendosi dell’opinione di alcuni studiosi di prim’ordine, Malik affronta criticamente e in profondità gli obiettivi della loro campagna, la loro relazione con la storia dell’illuminismo e il rapporto tra quest’ultimo e l’esperienza coloniale.

There is much on which I disagree with the Decolonising Our Minds approach. I disagree with its concept of “whiteness”, with the characterisation of the Enlightenment as “racist”, with the understanding of what “European thought” constitutes, with what it means to “decolonise”. What I admire, though, is the openness to have this debate, and to engage in the kinds of conversations I had with both students and academics. I spent an afternoon discussing, debating and disagreeing with Meera Sabaratnam. At the end, she said: “The discussion that we’re having now is exactly the kind of discussion that it should be possible to have at universities.” On that, I could not agree more.
