In questo reportage su BuzzFeed, dal fronte contro lo Stato islamico, Mike Giglio racconta che gli attacchi aerei non fermeranno l’ISIS, perché la vera battaglia che si sta combattendo è a terra. E spiega in che modo si stanno muovendo gli Stati Uniti.

As one YPG official working with the SDF, Lawand Rojava, saw it, the U.S. had little choice but to turn to the YPG after attempts to work with rival rebels yielded such lackluster results. “America and their friends spent millions of dollars on [supporting other rebel groups] and it has been four years, and it failed from the beginning,” he said. “Why did it fail? Because they picked the wrong side.”

Intanto un documento ottenuto da The Guardian descrive i piani di ISIS per realizzare uno stato tra Siria e Irak con dipartimenti, politica economica e tesoro.

The document – written as a foundation text to train “cadres of administrators” in the months after Isis’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria on 28 June 2014 – sketches out how to organise government departments including education, natural resources, industry, foreign relations, public relations and military camps.

Nelle parole di commentatori intervistati dal Guardian, il progetto fa comprendere il salto di qualità di ISIS rispetto a formazioni terroristiche con le quali compete e con una capacità di progettazione nuova.
Charlie Winter, un ricercatore della Georgia State University che ha visto il documento, ha detto che dimostra la grande capacità di programmazione di ISIS.

“Far from being an army of irrational, bloodthirsty fanatics, IS [Isis] is a deeply calculating political organisation with an extremely complex, well-planned infrastructure behind it.”
