Identity politics isn’t the problem for Democrats. It’s the solution.

Questa in breve è la tesi dell’articolo uscito pochi giorni fa sul sito del noto giornale New Republic.

Secondo questa tesi non è stato il focalizzarsi sulle Identity Politics a far perdere i Democratici nel 2016, come per esempio suggerisce Mark Lilla in questo suo noto scritto l’indomani della sconfitta elettorale; quello che ha condannato Hillary Clinton è stato non portare proposte concrete a riguardo.
I Democratici devono inoltre prendere atto che la “White Working Class” che ha votato per Trump non è più “recuperabile”

What doomed Clinton, in the end, was not that she appealed to racial and ethnic minorities, but that she paid them little more than lip service.

As Democrats attempt to move forward, they must come to grips with the fact that many of the working-class whites who abandoned the party are likely gone for good.
The sooner they accept that reality, the sooner they can win with the coalition they have.

Questa strategia, secondo l’articolo, se portata avanti ha ottime chances di essere vincente; ma avrebbe come lato negativo la polarizzazione insanabile tra repubblicani e democratici:

The bad news is that, even if they succeed, the discord and hatred that the GOP is using to mobilize its base will continue to divide the country for decades to come. The Republican emphasis on race and culture poses a solvable problem for Democrats. It poses a more difficult problem for democracy.
