In seguito alla decisione del FIDE di ospitare i mondiali di Scacchi del 2017 a Teheran, la campionessa statunitense Nazi Paikidze-Barnes ha deciso di boicottare l’evento.

Ritengo assolutamente inaccettabile che uno dei più importanti tornei per donne sia organizzato in un paese in cui le donne sono costrette a coprirsi con l’hijab. Se le cose stanno così, io non giocherò. Non è sport, questa è discriminazione sessuale.

Anche l’ecuadoriana Carla Heredia Serrano invita le altre 64 scacchiste a non partecipare.

Fra le contrarie al boicottaggio, l’iraniana Mitra Hejazipour, la Woman Grandmaster iraniana, e Ghoncheh Ghavami, che ha passato 5 mesi in detenzione per permettere alle donne iraniane di guardare le partite maschili allo stadio.

Obviously, I recognise Pakidize’s right – and that of every other human being – to choose how to dress and I applaud her insistence on her rights as a woman. But I believe that her choice to boycott the games is misguided.

A reductionist approach to the mandatory hijab has, in the past, functioned as a pretext to reinforce a rift between Iran and the west, as well as insinuating that Iranian women are passive beings who simply lack the will to improve their situation.
