Il Guardian riporta la notizia che la moglie di un finanziere che aveva sollecitato le dimissioni della rettrice Claudine Gay minacciando il taglio dei finanziamenti ad Harvard è accusata delle stesso comportamento.

La donna, già docente al MIT, ha copiato parecchi passaggi poi pubblicati nella tesi finale e in alcune pubblicazioni.  Il marito si è lamentato degli attacchi alla sua famiglia per la sua presa di posizione nei confronti della rettrice e ha minacciato sia il MIT che il giornale che ha riportato i plagi di sottoporli a una ricerca per vedere se anche essi siano incorsi nello stesso comportamento.

Previously, Ackman was a donor to the Democratic party. But the New York Times reported that the billionaire’s campaign against Harvard came because he resented the fact that years’ worth of donations to the university did not yield him more influence there. 

Conservatives have seized upon and supported Ackman’s complaints about Harvard.

Le ricerche di eventuali plagi sono state molto facilitate dall’introduzione di software specifici già da molti anni. Un altro articolo del Guardian riporta i pareri di alcuni esperti nel campo e di colleghi della rettrice Gay:

It was through AI that the inconsistencies in Gay’s scholarship were found. In some works, Gay credits a source in the wrong sentence. In others, she borrows language that even those who were ostensibly plagiarized accept as common phrasing within their field of study. “I am not at all concerned about the passages,” said the political science professor David Canon, whose work the Washington Free Beacon accused Gay of plagiarizing. “This isn’t even close to an example of academic plagiarism.”…

Even with the best plagiarism-ferreting tools, the answer isn’t always cut and dry. The offending passages in Gay’s dissertation acknowledgments, unoriginal as they look on first glance, could be charitably interpreted as intertextual references for a knowing audience. “If you look at the allegations,” says Bailey, “they include examples that are actually worrisome and raise serious issues. But they also include a lot of examples that are weak and meaningless.
