Slate rilancia, questa volta a firma di Jenée Desmond Harris la polemica contro i regali per adulti, dopo un elenco di buffi infortuni si immagina un Natale

 freed from the financial anxiety of buying for a long list of relatives, the worry that the gift you give someone won’t be equivalent in value to the one you receive, the pressure to come up with ideas for those who can’t figure out how to shop for you, and the burden of the unwanted items you’re left with when people mean well but miss the mark. Imagine if we all just got together to eat, and let go of this ridiculous ritual of spending tons of money and mental energy and not ending up with much we actually want.

Una proposta di compromesso può essere una cosa sotto i  10 euro spese di spedizione escluse, ma se si ha dei talenti e il tempo per esercitarli non ci si deve fare scrupolo a rimanere ampiamente al di sotto di tale soglia, ah no mi sono confuso, quello che l’autrice suggerisce è:

A little something consumable or small (think stocking stuffer or hostess gift) that is about the warm gesture… A coffee mug or baked good is perfectly fine

Madame Moitessier nei commenti segnala che anche gli economisti sono critici verso i regali di Natale agli adulti, considerandoli uno spreco: maglioni che non saranno mai indossati, libri che non verranno letti e raccomandano di dare i soldi direttamente o proprio di non fare i regali. Nel 2019 l’economista e divulgatore Tim Harford avanzava una soluzione alternativa in un podcast ripreso da The Indicator from Planet Money.
