In alcune zone degli Stati Uniti il tasso di vaccinazione contro il morbillo è molto basso. Accade ad esempio in California (qui un articolo sull’epidemia di morbillo disneyana, con decine di casi nello stato), dove le percentuali di persone che decidono di non vaccinarsi raggiungono picchi del 10%.
Un’infografica da The Guardian, a cui è collegato un articolo, mostra gli effetti delle malattie infettive, ed in particolare del morbillo, in comunità non sufficientemente protette.

Part of the problem, according to Dr Elizabeth Edwards, professor of pediatrics and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Research Program, is just that: vaccination is understood by many as an individual choice, when science makes clear that the choice – to vaccinate or not to vaccinate – can affect an entire community.

“When you immunize your child, you’re not only immunizing your child. That child’s immunization is contributing to the control of the disease in the population,” Edwards explained.

That sheltering effect is called herd immunity: a population that is highly immunized makes for a virus that can’t spread easily, providing protection to the community – or the herd – as a whole.
