Lo scrittore e giornalista Xan Brooks, in un articolo sul Guardian, si chiede in che direzione si stia evolvendo la nostra percezione dell’arte.

Il punto di partenza è il famoso monologo improvvisato da Orson Welles nel Terzo uomo:

In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

Brooks passa in rassegna le conseguenze dei recenti casi di molestie sessuali a Hollywood e, più in generale, il modo in cui negli ultimi anni vengono giudicati gli artisti e le loro opere. Le sue conclusioni sono incerte: è difficile capire dove condurrà il mutamento in corso.

In a chest of drawers are a stack of old DVDs. There’s Polanski’s Chinatown, Lars von Trier’s Dogville, Hitchcock’s Marnie. These remain some of my favourite films. Each is a powerful, insightful – and yes, even moral – work of art. I don’t think they’re compromised; I think they might be exempt. It’s just that this week, temporarily, I’m in no rush to rewatch them. Renaissance Italy seems less appealing and the old assumptions are toast. All at once, Switzerland seems a good place to make camp.
